Facebook launches new market research app after pulling similar app in January”

Facebook will use the app to gather as little data as possible to fulfill their needs, it said. According to its page, participants will be paid for agreeing to share their app-usage data such as what apps are installed on the phone, how much time the user spends using those apps and what devices are being used. In some cases, the app reportedly targeted users as young as 13-years old. Apple booted it from its app store and Facebook eventually shut it down completely. In that instance, the Facebook Research App was removed from Apple Inc.'s App Store for violating the phone maker's policies on data gathering.

Facebook announced today that it has launched a new app for Android users called Study from Facebook.

Facebook said it will compensate those who download Study, but a spokeswoman declined to share more details.

The new app will collect information about which apps people are using and for how long, including which app features are used. They do not need to be Facebook users.

The company previously rolled out two similar apps that tracked what activities people did on their phones. Participants will be paid an undisclosed monthly amount.

Facebook said Study would not collect user IDs, passwords, or content, including photos, videos, or messages.

To start with, the program is only available to Facebook users aged over 18 in the USA and India, and only on Android for now. Last year, a slew of documents released by the United Kingdom parliament revealed that Facebook used its now-defunct VPN app, Onavo, to track competitors through data it collected from users.

Facebook said it is looking to approach marketing research in "a responsible way" and that "what people expect when they sign up to participate in market research has changed".

"Providing users this up front sort of notice is definitely a good thing, and should be the norm for any company which markets, advertises or otherwise makes use of users' personal information for generating revenue", said Nathan Wenzler, the senior director of cybersecurity at wealth management firm Moss Adams.

At least this time around Facebook is being transparent will efforts to collect data from users and there's no non-disclosure agreement in the mix where users can't talk about their participation in the program.

The program is managed by a third party - Facebook's long-time partner Applause.
