Facebook won’t remove Zuck’s Instagram deepfake - yet”

Facebook did not remove the video but is quoted in media reports as saying that the video had been tagged as false and sank in the network's news feed ranking. Over the weekend, two British artists released a doctored video of Facebook's chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, as a sly comment on the spread of false information online.

The video was made by taking 2017 footage of Zuckerberg and using artificial intelligence technology, known as deepfake technology, to manipulate Zuckerberg's face to make it appear he said something he didn't.

"We will treat this content the same way we treat all misinformation on Instagram", an Instagram spokesperson told AFP.

The clip uses similar technology to the deepfake clips which surfaced on pornography sites past year, which use artificial intelligence (AI) to edit the faces of female celebrities onto the bodies of porn actors.

Asked whether a doctored video of Zuckerberg would get the same treatment as the manipulated Pelosi video, Neil Potts, Facebook's director of public policy, told a parliamentary hearing in Canada last month, "If it was the same video, inserting Mr. Zuckerberg for Speaker Pelosi, it would get the same treatment".

The word "Spectre" in the video refers to an art exhibition which is a part of the Sheffield Doc Fest, an global documentary festival held in Sheffield, UK from 6-11 June 2019.

"If third-party fact-checkers mark it as false, we will filter it from Instagram's recommendation surfaces".

A deepfake video of Mark Zuckerberg brings into question how Facebook will address fake or altered images or videos.

Perhaps complicating the situation for Facebook and Instagram a call late Tuesday from CBS for the company to remove the video.

The words that appeared to be coming out of his mouth were actually spoken by a voice actor reading from a script provided by Posters and another artist, Daniel Howe. The installation was featured this month at the Sheffield Doc/Fest, a documentary film festival in the United Kingdom.

Others have used the technology to highlight the potential risks it poses.

He added that the Zuckerberg clip is intended for viewers to "engage in the key issues around data, privacy, technology and democracy".

Ben-Ami, whose company focuses on dubbing speech in videos from one language to another, is concerned about the video and others Canny AI made spreading without the context that they were created as art. This whole video did not happen -it was doctored.

This goes to show how easy it is to create deepfakes.

"It just recreates the facial movements of Zuckerberg from the facial movements of the voice actor", Ben-Ami said. The clip slows down his speech and inserts new audio. Many have pointed out that much of their audience takes it for gospel.

Even though the clip is certainly fake, Instagram is not planning to remove it.
