Maine governor signs abortion access law

Maine governor signs abortion access law”

A staunch defender of abortion rights and Maine's first female governor, Mills introduced the bill this year and supported a similar measure last legislative session when she was serving as attorney general.

It will be enacted 90 days after the Legislature adjourns, which is expected in mid-June.

"Allowing qualified and licensed medical professionals to perform abortions will ensure that ME women, especially those in rural areas, are able to access critical reproductive health care services when and where they need them from qualified providers they know and trust", Mills said in a statement. She signed it into law Monday, Fox News reported.

But the law is facing criticism for expanding the list of professionals who could perform an abortion.

The law will allow physician assistants and advanced practice registered nurses to perform abortions, according to a press release from Mills' office.

Carroll Conley, executive director of the Christian Civic League of ME, also echoed the safety concerns and told the New York Times that it's unclear whether nurses and other health care professionals will receive enough training to administer abortion by the time the law takes effect.

Only doctors can perform abortions in most states, for the safety of the woman. Stacey Guerin, also of Maine.

According to the governor's statement, seven other states allow some non-doctor medical professionals to perform abortions.

"Planned Parenthood claims to champion women's health care, but here's their president praising ME for legislation that allows *non-doctors* to perform abortions", National Review's Alexandra DeSanctis said in a tweet.

Following court or agency rulings, almost two dozen others, including Vermont and New Hampshire, have also expanded their list of abortion medication providers.

"States across the country, including Vermont and New Hampshire, have already eliminated this outdated restriction on abortion care", said Sara Gideon, the speaker of the Maine House of Representatives.

Maine, Missouri and Vermont all passed measures or secured court victories that will help expand abortion access in their states, at least for the time being.

ME is also working on a bill to use taxpayer money to fund abortions for Medicaid recipients.
