Was the USA women's team "ruthless" in their rout of Thailand?

Was the USA women's team

"For me it's disrespectful, it's disgraceful". This is a team in full attack mode, fighting not just to win a World Cup, but to prove a larger point about their worth. Respect to Thailand's keeper, Sukanya Chor Charoenying, who managed to not walk off the field or sink into the pitch as the United States women kept coming at her one after the other after the other.

"Four days after the FIFA Women's World Cup kicked off. the tournament has reached an important milestone with over one million tickets having now been allocated to fans worldwide", soccer's governing body said in a statement. "This is part of the growth of the game".

Opinion was split following the one-sided match, with some applauding the Americans for staying focused throughout, while others felt they should have eased off or not celebrated their goals with such enthusiasm.

"I definitely think we need to keep our feet on the ground and I think we will, but I do think that we created a lot of good energy and that's something that can help carry us forward", said Mewis, the 26-year-old midfielder who was making her World Cup finals debut.

U.S striker Alex Morgan, who scored five goals in the game, was asked about her team's celebrations in the post-match press conference.

Alex Morgan starred with five goals in the Group F opener in Reims, in Champagne country, as the U.S. pulverised a Thailand side playing at just their second World Cup.

The US team scored 10 goals in the second half in Reims on Tuesday as they bettered Germany´s 11-0 win over Argentina in 2007 and shattered their own previous tournament best of 7-0.

"Imagine it being you out there", she added. "Celebrate. Would you tell a men's team to not score or celebrate?" she tweeted.

Retired American global Taylor Twellman, now an ESPN analyst, tweeted he had zero problems with the scoreline given "this is THE tournament BUT celebrating goals (like 9) leaves a sour taste in my mouth like many of you".

"I did say i thought it was excessive and disrespectful the goal celebrations of the American team once the score hit 8-0".

The U.S. outshot Thailand 30-2 (21-2 in shots on target) and had 75 percent possession. "This is the World Cup, not a rec league tournament", she wrote.
