New Research Has Discovered That Cannabidiol Is Active Against Gram-Positive Bacteria”

Work led by Dr Mark Blaskovich at The University of Queensland's Institute for Molecular Bioscience's Centre found that Cannabidiol was remarkably effective at killing a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria, including bacteria that have become resistant to other antibiotics, and did not lose effectiveness after extended treatment. The research was organized in a joint effort with Botanix Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a company that discovers drugs that is now researching the effectiveness of manufactured cannabidiol for skin conditions.

The research, which used a synthetically-produced form of CBD in test tubes, found CBD to be active against strains of staphylococcus, which cause staph infections, and streptococcus bacteria, which cause strep throat. One of the problems of the studies is that, while the cannabis component displays antibiotic effects in the lab, the researchers do not know if CBD will have the same results and cure infections in human patients.

So far, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has only approved CBD as a treatment of seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy. Some of these strains had shows resistance to other antibiotic drugs.

The findings were recently presented at this year's meeting of the American Society for Microbiology. The drug was also effective at disrupting biofilms, a form of bacterial growth that causes infections that are hard to treat. "The combination of inherent antimicrobial activity and potential to reduce damage caused by the inflammatory response to infections is particularly attractive", Blaskovich continues.

The research has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal and should be viewed as preliminary.

The promise is there, but more tests and research are needed. However, Botanix does have several CBD formulations that are now undergoing trials in humans.

Superbugs are bacteria that have grown resistant to traditional antibiotics, oftentimes leaving healthcare professionals scrambling to treat infections.

To be really useful, it would be good if we could show that it treated systemic infections e.g. pneumonia, or complicated tissue infections, where you have to give it orally or by intravenous dosing.

Blaskovich told Live Science that people should not try to self-treat infections with CBD at this time.

"It is not effective against Gram-negative bacteria, which are especially hard to develop new antibiotics for because they have a very selective outer-membrane that prevents most drugs from entering the bacterial cell".
