Astronauts Clicked An Incredible Photo of the Rare 'Raikoke Volcano' Eruption”

And recently, astronauts captured a spectacular shot of the rare Raikoke volcano that erupted last week on the Kuril islands over the North Pacific ocean.

Raikoke Volcano on the Kuril Islands has been dormant since 1924.

On the morning of June 22, astronauts shot a photograph of the volcanic plume rising in a narrow column after which spreading out in part of the plume often known as the umbrella region.

The incredible image, which shows a huge plume of smoke rising up and surrounded by white clouds, was released by NASA Earth Observatory. Unlike its more volcanically active neighbours, Raikoke has been dormant since 1924. The pictures show the classic plume rising to the sky, with hot ash at the very top. The Terra and Suomi NPP satellites, operated by NASA and the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration respectively, also managed to capture photos of the incident.

A dramatic photo released by NASA shows the volcano's plume shooting up over the clouds. It then went silent for almost 100 years, until, on June 22, Raikoke spewed forth a blast of ash and volcanic glass so powerful it could be seen from space. This cloud could likely be water vapor condensing out of the air; alternatively, it could be steam from the hot bright orange magma entering the water.

The "unexpected" eruption caused ash plumes to rise to around 13 kilometers (8 miles) above sea levels, with other satellite data analyses indicating it may have reached an altitude of as much as 17 kilometers (10 miles), prompting aircraft advisories in the region.

- Dan Lindsey (@DanLindsey77) June 26, 2019Mount Ulawun volcano is listed as one of 16 "Decade Volcanoes" targeted for research because they pose a significant risk of large, violent eruptions.

"Weather officials warned aircrafts flying over the area to be careful of any volcanic ash following the eruption", ESA said. Toxic gases may have already reached the stratosphere, the second layer of Earth's atmosphere.
