West Nile Virus Detected in Mosquito in Twin Falls County”

This positive pool represents the first evidence of WNV activity reported in Wisconsin this year.

West Nile virus is influenced by many factors, including climate, the number and types of birds and mosquitoes in an area, and the level of WNV immunity in birds.

A total of 75 people contracted West Nile virus in the region on Montreal's South Shore, making it the most affected part of the province in 2018.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Citizens can view a mosquito trapping and spraying map depicting areas where WNV has been detected and subsequently sprayed to reduce the adult mosquito population. "We urge everyone in Wisconsin to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites and the illnesses they spread".

The department says common symptoms for the virus include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. However, some individuals - less than one percent - can develop serious neurologic illnesses such as encephalitis or meningitis. "The possibility of exposure to West Nile Virus is present anytime mosquitos are active". More severe infections may involve the central nervous system.

Using insect repellant with an EPA-registered active ingredient like DEET, expecially at dawn and dusk when mosquitos are most active.

Wearing loose-fitting clothes with long sleeves and trousers.

Checking for, and draining, any standing water around your home every three to six days. Swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs should be cleaned and chlorinated.

Report sick or dead birds to the Dead Bird Hotline at 1-800-433-1610; the line is open each year from May 1 - October 31. Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes.
