Here's how to watch the total solar eclipse from anywhere”

A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.

Where will the Total Solar Eclipse be visible from?

Rihanna fans had a field day with the rumor that the singer and actress was in La Serena to see the total solar eclipse - so much so that her alleged attendance became a trending topic on Twitter over the weekend. Although totality will only occur over certain areas in the world, people from different parts of the globe can still witness the eclipse through various live streaming platforms. For those watching on Earth, the moon appears to cover the sun, with a ring of the sun's light surrounding the moon.

The Total Solar Eclipse will be visible in parts of Chile and Argentina.

Unfortunately, only Chile, Argentina, and some islands in the Pacific Ocean such as Oeno Island, Tahiti, and Bora Bora will be able to experience the totality - the state of which the moon (or planet!) blocks the sun completely - first-hand.

Countries nearby such as Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Ecuador will be able to witness a partial eclipse, as only part of the Sun will be blocked.

According to NASA, a total eclipse occurs somewhere on earth about every year and a half.

Though first-hand viewing is limited, different observatories such as the Cerro Tololo Observatory and La Silla Observatory, both in Chile, will have a live webcast of the eclipse.

Here are five things you need to know about the 2019 solar eclipse.

It will be the first total solar eclipse since August 21, 2017, and the only only celestial event of its kind in 2019.

As per Indian Standard Time, the full eclipse will begin at 11:31 pm on July 2 at the first location to see the full eclipse and last till 12:52 am on July 3 at the last location to see the full eclipse. Make some time to see it, or travel to a spot in totality if you're close enough.

A youth tests special binoculars to view tomorrow's total solar eclipse near Central Park in La Higuera, Chile, Monday, July 1, 2019. Also known as "Surya Grahan" in Hindi, the eclipse will begin at 10.25 pm IST on 2 July.

During total solar eclipses, scientists get a chance to study the sun's corona.

One group, led by Jay Pasaschoff (Williams College) will continue an experiment that stretches back more than 20 years.

You can view that broadcast on the museum's website or through their free app for iOS or Android. It will, again, be visible from Chile and Argentina.
