CDC warns outbreaks from 'Crypto' parasite found in pools on the rise

CDC warns outbreaks from 'Crypto' parasite found in pools on the rise”

Crypto parasites bring cryptosporidiosis, a disease that causes watery diarrhea that can last for weeks at a time.

The nasty parasite spreads through the feces of infected humans or animals into water and food, putting pool visitors, burger lovers, and childcare users at the greatest risk. We also send out a Weekly K+R Update, bundling together all the kidnap, ransom and extortion news of the week in one easy to read newsletter.

Between 2009 and 2017, there were 444 cryptosporidiosis outbreaks reported in 40 states and Puerto Rico.

Michele Hlavsa, head of the CDC's Healthy Swimming Program, has warned that children are especially capable of, and vulnerable to, the spread of the risky parasite.

"To prevent cryptosporidiosis outbreaks, CDC recommends not swimming or attending child care if ill with diarrhea and recommends hand washing after contact with animals".

Twenty-two cases were foodborne, most involving unpasteurized milk or apple cider.

The CDC says outbreaks of the summertime parasite increased an average of 13% each year from 2009 to 2017. Around 7,500 people have become sick in the USA from outbreaks in the last decade, according to this report.

Though it's nearly never fatal, one death has been reported since 2009, according to the CDC. "They don't know how to use the toilet and wash their hands, or are just learning how".

The parasite is a problem in pools is because an infected swimmer can excrete the parasite at several orders of magnitude higher than the amount necessary to cause infection. When a diarrheal incident does occur, the pool operator is supposed to clear the pool and flush it with extremely high levels of chlorine or bromine to kill the parasite.

Children swim in one of the pools at the Munsu Water Park.

People who come in contact with livestock should wash their hands thoroughly and remove any shoes or clothing to avoid contaminating other environments, like their homes.
