Salmonella outbreak linked to pig ear dog treats, the CDC warns”

Call your vet if your dog starts showing the symptoms of salmonella infection which include having diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus or vomiting. Some 13 USA states have reported the Salmonella cases involving 45 people infected by the bacteria.

Forty-five pet owners in 13 states have caught Salmonella from pig ear dog treats. No deaths had been associated with the outbreak as of the posting of the FDA and CDC notices Wednesday. A common supplier of pig ear treats in this outbreak has not been identified.

The department says lab samples from two retailers in MI tested positive for Salmonella, but it did not name the retailers. Needless to say, after handling pig ears or other pet treats and food, dog owners are advised to always use soap and water to thoroughly wash their hands. We are working with the FDA as they continue their investigation as to what caused the reported Salmonella related illnesses.

Of those interviewed, 71 percent reported contact with pig ear dog treats or with dogs who were fed pig ear dog treats.

The affected treats were sold in bulk at a variety of retailers. They are also advised to keep pet treats and food away from children's reach and places where human food is prepared or stored.

Don't use your pet's feeding bowl to scoop food.

Don't let your pet lick your mouth or face after it eats pet food or treats. Affected animals may seem more exhausted than usual, and may have a fever or vomit.

In interviews, ill people answered questions about animal contact in the week before they became ill.

Anyone who has come into contact with the suspect products and developed symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention. These samples were then tested for salmonella. Salmonella infection symptoms can mimic other illnesses, frequently leading to misdiagnosis. Otherwise healthy adults are usually sick for four to seven days. The disease is spread through feces and saliva, and it can be transmitted to animals and humans.
