Boys will be given HPV jab from September

Boys will be given HPV jab from September”

In a new programme aimed to protect boys from the risk of HPV-associated cancers, British boys will now also receive the HPV shot, which is estimated to prevent 100,000 cancers by 2058.

"The BMA has for a long time been calling for an extension of the HPV vaccination programme to be extended to boys in United Kingdom and the confirmation that this will go ahead in September is very welcome as it will undoubtedly reduce the risk of young men contracting cancers linked to the virus in adult life".

BMA board of science chair Professor Dame Parveen Kumar said: 'The BMA has for a long time been calling for an extension of the HPV vaccination programme to be extended to boys in United Kingdom and the confirmation that this will go ahead in September is very welcome as it will undoubtedly reduce the risk of young men contracting cancers linked to the virus in adult life.

Girls aged 12 to 13 have been provided the HPV vaccine since 2008 in the UK. Since its introduction, infections of some types of HPV (HPV 16/18) in 16-21-year-old women have reduced by 86% in England, while a Scottish study showed that the vaccine has reduced pre-cancerous cervical disease in women by up to 71%.

- HPV is thought to be responsible for more than 90 per cent of cervical cancers, as well as 90 per cent of anal, about 70 per cent of vaginal and vulvar cancers and more than 60 per cent of penile cancers.

"Offering the vaccine to boys will not only protect them but will also prevent more cases of HPV related cancers in girls and reduce the overall burden of these cancers in both men and women in the future", said Dr Mary Ramsay, Head of Immunisation at PHE.

Boys in the United Kingdom will be given the HPV jab from September in a bid to wipe out cervical cancer and prevent thousands of cases of other cancers, the Government has announced.

She said: "With the boys it will not only protect against cervical cancer for the girls through herd immunity but could also protect against anal cancers and throat cancers".

Paula Mclachlan, screening and immunisation manager for Kent and Medway, is encouraging all who have opportunity to be vaccinated, to take it.

They will need two doses of the jab in order to be fully protected, with a follow-up dose administered six months to two years after the first.

Older boys (those now aged 13 to 18) will not be offered the vaccine on a "catch-up" basis. I think it is so important for women and boys to take up the HPV vaccine. Protection lasts for at least 10 years, although probably much longer.

It is hoped in doing so, the number of cervicl cancer diagnoses and incidences of the human papilloma virus (HPV) will be cut drastically.

Genital HPV infections are common and highly contagious. They are also transmitted through various sexual activities as they are usually in hands, fingers, genitals and mouth.

The estimates produced by the University of Warwick are based on a comparison between there being no HPV vaccination programme and the girls programme starting in 2008 with the addition of boys in 2017.
