Android Q nerfs gesture navigation if you use a third-party launcher

Android Q nerfs gesture navigation if you use a third-party launcher”

The new navigation gestures arrived in Android Q Beta 3 in May (our Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rahman discovered WIP two months ahead of the official launch) along with a new back gesture, which works by swiping inwards from either the left or the right edge of the smartphone. With Android Q, Google aims to provide a true gesture navigation experience with much smoother transitions and new features. Namely, that's the 2-button navigation centered around a central pill-shaped icon and a "back" key.

When a custom launcher is installed, the default gesture navigation is made unavailable on Android Q as Google has greyed out that part.

When we tried to use a third-party launcher on beta 4, we saw that gesture navigation mode was pretty buggy with a third-party launcher.

Google hasn't provided any details just yet about why the navigation feature for the upcoming firmware update is blocked and tech-savvy users can regain access by typing in a command line - adb shell cmd overlay enable com.android.internal.systemui.navbar.gestural - via Android Debug Bridge (ADB). Since the Android Q Beta 5 has not been released yet, it is not possible to test out the new boot animation unless you are among the lucky few individuals who received the update early. So, if you really enjoyed this gesture or the plethora of gestures launchers like Nova, Lawnchair etc. offer, you won't be able to use them in Android Q. Now, having said that, developers might be able to implement gestures in their launcher by playing around with Android Q source code, but that's something we will have to wait and see. Users can open the drawer by peeking the drawer and then swiping it.

The drawer behavior is changing.
