Google and Amazon bring the YouTube app back to Fire TV

Google and Amazon bring the YouTube app back to Fire TV”

In addition to bringing the YouTube app back to Fire TV devices, Amazon has added support for Chromecast devices in the Prime Video app.

"The all-new YouTube app will appear in the "Your Apps and Channels" row on all compatible devices", Amazon explains in a company blog post today.

The official YouTube app has made its comeback to the Amazon Fire TV platform more than a year after being absent over a spat between Amazon and Google. Amazon might now sell Chromecast devices (at least, in the U.S. - like nearly everything else, searching for "Chromecast" on Amazon AU is a shitshow), but Home products are conspicuously absent. YouTube TV and YouTube Kids apps are also in the works, but they're not ready quite yet.

Amazon Prime members will also be happy to hear that Amazon's Prime Video now works with Chromecast.

What's most curious is how it took so long to resolve - time in which, you'd imagine, customers looked to other services that could offer both Prime Video and YouTube on the same platform, such as Roku or Apple TV. "In addition to the select Android TV devices that now have Prime Video, many more Android TV smart TVs, set-top boxes and streaming devices will also soon have Prime Video, with rollout starting today".

"With expanded Alexa voice controls, you can find, launch, and control your entertainment". And Chromecast Ultra users get access to 4,000 titles included with Prime at no additional cost.

On Tuesday Amazon and Google announced that YouTube will return to Amazon's Fire TV lineup today.

Chromecast and Chromecast built-in users, as well as Android TV users, now have access to the Prime Video catalog, including the latest seasons of Amazon Original series, like Good Omens, Fleabag and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, along with the newest Amazon Original movies such as The Jonas Brothers' documentary Chasing Happiness and Guava Island starring Donald Gambino and Rihanna.
