Mexican finance chief quits over policy discrepancies

Mexican finance chief quits over policy discrepancies”

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, under pressure after the resignation of his finance minister, warned other officials may quit his government as part of the deep policy changes he is leading.

Urzua tweeted: "There were too many disagreements in economic matters".

Urzua's commitment to fiscal discipline was seen as a bright spot in Lopez Obrador's administration, which has rattled investor confidence with abrupt moves against business interests in major infrastructure projects. "I am convinced that economic policy should be based on evidence, taking into account the different consequences to which it might lead, and that it should be free from the extremes of right or left wing", wrote Ursua. Herrera is well known to investors and seen as a competent economic manager. "However, these convictions did not resonate during my tenure in this administration".

"(Herrera) is a well-known figure with good dialogue with market participants and is not perceived as a. dogmatic individual", said Alberto Ramos, head of Latin American research at Goldman Sachs.

President AMLO made a statement shortly after Urzua's resignation saying that "Urzua is not in agreement with the governments decisions" and nominated his Deputy Finance Minister Herrera to replace Urzua.

Urzua also worked with Lopez Obrador from 2000 to 2003 when he was Mexico City mayor.

In Urzua's resignation letter, he cited problems with other members of the government as one reason for leaving.
