Tommy Robinson jailed for nine months for contempt of court”

Tommy Robinson has been jailed for contempt of court over a video he broadcast from Leeds on social media which featured defendants in a criminal trial.

Supporters of the far-right activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon known as Tommy Robinson attacked journalists and hurled abuse at police outside the United Kingdom parliament on Thursday.

Dame Victoria Sharp told Robinson that the time he previously spent behind bars for the contempt will be taken into account, reducing his sentence to 19 weeks - of which he will serve half before being released.

Robinson's supporters thronged outside the Old Bailey - including attention-seeking controversialist Katie Hopkins, who he arrived with - and UKIP leader Gerard Batten, who addressed those gathered, insisting "this is a political not a judicial decision".

After his sentence was announced, Robinson posted a message on his Telegram account and dismissed the judgement as a "joke" and urged his fans to protest "outside whatever prison I'm in on Saturday".

Two Old Bailey judges said his Facebook Live video of defendants in the trial had encouraged "vigilante action".

Passing sentence today, Dame Victoria Sharp said: "He [Robinson] has lied about a number of matters and sought to portray himself as the victim of unfairness and oppression".

Robinson arrived late to court proceedings wearing a shirt emblazoned with the slogan "convicted of journalism".

Robinson denied any wrongdoing throughout the trial, seemingly unaware of the meaning of contempt of court, which is created to ensure fair criminal trials. The idea is that juries must not be influenced by anything but the evidence they hear in court.

The case against Robinson came after he filmed a group of men from a Huddersfield grooming gang who were accused of sex offences against young girls in May 2018. However, he was released on bail pending a retrial due to a few procedural errors.

According to legal commentator Joshua Rozenberg, Robinson - who was originally jailed for 13 months after being found in contempt of court on the day of the broadcast but was freed after two months when the original finding was overturned - has already served 10 weeks in prison.

He was found guilty of contempt of court last week in relation to the live streaming which was broadcast to almost a million followers.

Cox welcomed the sentencing in a statement.

He told Sky News outside the court that he wanted to move because people there "were behind him".
