British Grand Prix should not clash with Wimbledon, says Lewis Hamilton

British Grand Prix should not clash with Wimbledon, says Lewis Hamilton”

"I think it will be close here but hopefully we will have a better shot".

'The British Grand Prix is the most special of the year, ' he said.

"And they can be risky to Lewis Hamilton". He won the last Grand Prix in Austria with a stunning drive, recovering from a awful first lap which saw him drop from second to seventh.

The British Grand Prix should ensure it does not clash with other major sporting events, Lewis Hamilton has said before this weekend's meeting.

'This is such a special weekend it needs the focus of the whole country, but people will be switching between channels on Sunday not knowing what to watch.

"I suspect this weekend, it will be closer between us all", he told the FIA Thursday afternoon press conference.

"We're fully aware that the Ferraris and the Red Bulls have taken a step forward, and the pace that they had in the last race was great".

Having led for much of the race, Leclerc missed out on victory in Spielberg after a charging Verstappen completed a last-gasp pass on the Ferrari driver at Turn 3 on the penultimate lap.

Asked what setting a new record would mean to him, Hamilton said: 'I'm not really one for records so if it doesn't happen this weekend it's no biggie for me because I'm going to try and be here for a little bit longer.

"It's really just about being diligent, making sure we've left no stone unturned", he explained.

"Last weekend was a bit hard for us".

Despite narrowly missing out on victory in Austria, Leclerc - who is now fifth in the drivers standings - said he could take heart from Ferrari's upturn in form, even if he expects rivals Mercedes to be much stronger this weekend.

"It's definitely been the best start to a season I've had and it's insane to think where we are now", Hamilton said.

If nothing else, F1 fans in the United Kingdom who don't have (or want) Sky's pay-per-view coverage will at least be able to watch events at Silverstone live courtesy of the fact that the British Grand Prix is one of a number of "protected" sports events which must be available on free-to-air. If he were to claim pole for his home race it would break Ayrton Senna's record of six at his own home event.

'I've had some spectacular races here but we're here to improve this weekend as a team.

"The fact that that's even a possibility is quite unreal for me", he said. "I think just ultimately, it's really important to put that stuff out of your head, out of your mind and focus on the job at hand".
