Facebook to bring Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell to Oculus Rift

Facebook to bring Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell to Oculus Rift”

There have been reports that Oculus is working with Ubisoft to bring about a VR version of Splinter Cell and Assassins Creed.

That is according to The Information, which cites two insider sources with knowledge on the matter.

Part of this strategy involves working with big video game developers on well-known IPs. People have been begging Ubisoft for years to release a new Splinter Cell game. It isn't clear when Assassin's Creed and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell will arrive, nevertheless it's safe to say, we will count on more VR games for Oculus headsets soon. There are stealth games, and then there's Splinter Cell. Other than a limited-time, Splinter Cell crossover event with T om Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands past year.

After the hype following the wildly successful Oculus Rift Kickstarter in 2012 - which came before Facebook acquired the VR company for USD$2bn (£1.59bn) in 2014 - the VR market has settled to slow growth. Jason Rubin, who's the vice president of special gaming initiatives (and former head of content at Oculus and co-founder of Naughty Dog), is said to be leading the charge.

It goes to show how far Oculus has come in the 3 years since the launch of the original Rift; a headset that was nothing more than a window into the virtual world it originally shipped with a simple Xbox controller and no way to move about virtual space with your body.

Facebook initially ramped up its VR efforts in 2019 with this year's release of the standalone Oculus Quest, which starts at $399 (£314, though the RRP in the United Kingdom is £399). Sales for the Oculus Quest have reportedly exceeded Facebook's internal sales projections, and VR and AR headset sales in 2019 are already up 54.1% from 2018. And Sony's ties to the gaming industry have earned it timed or permanent PlayStation VR exclusives on some big franchise games like Skyrim VR as well as titles from prominent developers like From Software, the creator of Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
