Ivory Coast vs. Algeria - Football Match Report

Ivory Coast vs. Algeria - Football Match Report”

Algeria have set up a semi-final clash with Nigeria at the ongoing Africa Cup Nations after they overcame Cote d'Ivoire in a nailbiting quarter-final clash on Thursday.

It was the Ivorians who started the brighter of the two teams, with Max Gradel rattling the post from distance and Jonathan Kodjia failing to apply the finish from close range after superb work from Wilfried Zaha on the right.

Earlier, Sofiane Feghouli crashed home Ramy Bensebaini's centre to give the North African nation the lead after 21 minutes, before Baghdad Bounedjah missed a chance to extend their advantage with a penalty he sent crashing against the crossbar.

In the shootout, Youcef Belaili struck the woodwork when he had a chance to clinch victory for Algeria, then Ivory Coast captain Serey Die hit the same post and his team were eliminated.

Forward Bounedjah missed a penalty in the second half of regular time and was visibly upset by his failure, fearing it would cost Algeria a first last-four place since 2010.

At his post-match press-conference, Belmadi praised the doggedness of Ibrahim Kamara's side which put his players on their toes for the game's entirety in Suez but believed his side deserved to win the game.

"The match was very hard as the Ivory Coast were compact, organised and waiting for mistakes from us", said Algeria coach Djamel Belmadi.

"I think we are heading towards the end (of the tournament for him)".

Algeria will now meet Nigeria in the semi-finals at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday as they seek to end their long wait for continental success that stretches back to 1990.

Despite the 30 plus temperature in the Egyptian city both teams served up a fine game with Algeria dominating possession and Ivory Coast looking unsafe on the counter with Max Gradel particularly sharp forLes Elephants.

Ivory Coast are seeking a third Nations Cup crown, with their last triumph coming in 2015. Algeria kept pressing hard in the second and the Ivorian goalkeeper Sylvain Gbohouo in a reckless tackle and referee Bamlak Tessema Weyesa blows his whistle for a foul.

The Ivorian Elephants were playing much better than in previous matches and equalised just past the hour mark, ending a 422-minute run by Mbolhi without conceding a goal in Egypt.

Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha went into the quarter-final looking to increase his two-goal tally at the tournament.
