Salmonella outbreak tied to pig-ear dog treats expands to 27 states

Salmonella outbreak tied to pig-ear dog treats expands to 27 states”

Two deaths have been reported; one in OH and one in Texas.

The CDC reported on Tuesday that the outbreak is linked to contact with backyard poultry, such as chicks and ducklings, from multiple hatcheries are the likely source of these outbreaks.

Two deaths have been reported and some 122 people have been hospitalized from almost a dozen different serotypes of this bacteria linked to backyard poultry, according to the July 19 posting from the CDC, which said the illnesses started on dates from January 1 through July 6.

Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, a common bacterial foodborne illness, the CDC notes.

People can get sick from salmonella after touching poultry or their environment. Birds carrying the bacteria can appear healthy and clean.

Pet owners should also wash their hands thoroughly after touching pet food, and not allow pets that have consumed potentially contaminated pig ears to lick their owners' faces or mouths. This includes washing hands, cutting boards, counters and utensils with hot water and soap after handling raw meat.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the outbreak is linked to backyard poultry.

"We have had 56 salmonella cases in Tennessee associated with the poultry outbreak and no cases associated with the pig ear dog treats", said Bill Christian, a spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Health.

No deaths have been reported.

CBS News reports that back in early June Pet Supplies Plus recalled bulk packages of pig ear treats for dogs that were sold at 400 stores across the country, and since then another 48 people Salmonella related illnesses have been reported.

People are being urged not to feed recalled pig ears to their dog but rather throw them away in a secure container so that your pets and other animals can't eat them. The CDC is still investigating and will provide more information as it becomes available.

The illness usually lasts four to seven days and most people recover without treatment.

If you are concerned about symptoms, such as a high fever (temperature over 102), blood in your stool, diarrhea or frequent vomiting that prevents keeping liquids down, see your health care provider.

Most persons infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.
