World Health Organization praises Rwanda's Ebola preparedness”

The outbreak has killed over 1,700 people since it was declared almost a year ago.

However, the World Health Organization suspects that a quarter of all infections might not be detected, as people die but their relatives do not know that they had Ebola. The WHO said it is continuously monitoring security issues and implementing mitigation measures to ensure staff safety. All are troubling signs.

Over 1,600 people have since died from the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in DR Congo since August 2018. The patient was one of three family members diagnosed with Ebola after traveling from the DRC.

Health officials warned that although there are now no Ebola cases in Uganda, the DRC's outbreak continues to escalate, posing a risk to Uganda, which shares a long and porous border with the DRC.

Elsewhere, other countries in the outbreak region continue to prepare for the arrival of the virus.

The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials held an Ebola preparedness briefing Thursday to discuss how the US public health system is taking action in response to the current Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The WHO declared the Ebola outbreak an global health emergency earlier in July, after the haemorrhagic fever spread to Goma, a major urban centre near the border with Rwanda.

In addition to a detailed National Preparedness Plan, the country is training health workers in early detection and response, educating communities about Ebola, vaccinating health workers in high-risk areas, equipping health facilities, and conducting simulation exercises to maintain a high level of readiness.

Tens of thousands of people cross the border from Goma to the Rwandan city of Gisenyi each day. Hospitals must regularly update the monitoring task and treatment of Ebola patients.

They say the funding would meet about half the needs of a new Ebola response plan which is due to be agreed by the Congolese government and an worldwide consortium.
