Deadly mosquito-borne brain swelling virus detected in Florida

Deadly mosquito-borne brain swelling virus detected in Florida”

"The Department continues to conduct statewide surveillance for mosquito-borne illnesses, including West Nile virus infections, Eastern equine encephalitis, St. Louis encephalitis, malaria, chikungunya and dengue", officials said.

The Arizona Department of Agriculture notes, however, that humans (and horses), once infected, do not transmit the virus and are therefore regarded as "dead end" hosts. "It can cause brain swelling".

While there's only been an average of seven cases of the EEE virus reported in U.S. residents each year, the disease is known to be fatal about 30 percent of the the time, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A deadly mosquito-borne virus has been detected in the United States. Testing shows the virus is present in the Bay Area, and all it takes is a bite from an infected mosquito to become sick.

Drain water from garbage cans, house gutters, buckets, pool covers, coolers, toys, flower pots or any other containers where sprinkler or rain water has collected.

To be certain of destroying the eggs, however, Kretschmer stresses it's not enough just to dump out water standing in plant trays, pet bowls, tree hollows-or anywhere water can collect. This means wearing long sleeves and trousers, and using a proven bug repellent.

Do not retain accumulated water. For swimming pools, ensuring adequate chlorination will prevent the insects from reproducing inside. Lastly, wear long-sleeve shirts and trousers when outdoors, especially at nighttime.

"We can't emphasize enough that people apply effective repellant before going outside, and wear protective clothing like long-sleeved shirts", advises Kretschmer, "in the acknowledgement that you can be bitten at any time". "You especially want to protect your children and yourself from mosquitos".

People who contract EEEV typically start to notice symptoms - including fever, headache, chills, diarrhea and irritability - about 4 to 10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito, according to the CDC. The CDC recommends using Environment Protection Agency-registered ones with ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. If you're experiencing any of this, it's better to be safe than sorry and get checked out right away. Also, make sure windows (and doors, if possible) have screens that are intact to keep mosquitoes out.
