Earth Just Got Saved From An Asteroid”

Despite the catastrophic effect of a possible impact, scientists believe that 2019 OK is not capable of triggering the same level of environmental effect caused by the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs millions of years ago.

The rock, named Asteroid 2019 OK, flew just 45,000 miles (73,000 kilometers) from Earth, which is less than 20% of the distance between Earth and the moon, the Business Insider reported. The asteroid was in fact closer to Earth than the Moon at a distance of almost 45,000 miles, according to a report in The Washington Post. Brown wrote that the lack of warnings indicates how rapidly potentially unsafe asteroids can sneak upon us. Astronomers will still continue to monitor asteroids and better yet NASA are now working on ways to deflect asteroids that are in route to collide with Earth.

According to NASA, Asteroid 2019 OK has been close to Earth earlier than, however by no means so shut. Incidentally, 2019 OK was far larger than the Chelyabinsk meteor, which measured no more than 20m across, but damaged 7,200 buildings, collapsed roofs and shattered windows.

When 2019 OK approached our planet, anyone nearby could have spotted it with a pair of binoculars as a speck of light slowly drifting across the sky, Brown wrote. However, a couple of days earlier to that, it was a thousand times fainter & was more hard to spot. Its relatively small size, unusual orbit, and fast speed all conspired to make it tough to spot, researchers told the Washington Post.

Astronomers around the world continue to work to monitor any asteroids that pose danger to us.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory confirmed SONEAR's discovery, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. NASA manages to track less than one third of the major asteroids.

The difficulties in determining how to defend against these objects without damaging the Earth or its environs is even more critical and more complex than tracking them is. Rather than destruction of the asteroid, which might cause it to break into multiple destructive asteroids, the solution might be a "gentle nudge rather than a vicious kick" away from our fragile planet.
