Chandrayaan 2: Third-orbit raising manoeuvre completed, all parameters normal”

The maneuver was done using the onboard propulsion system for a firing duration of 989 seconds.

"Third earth bound orbit raising maneuver for Chandrayaan2 spacecraft has been performed today (July 29, 2019) at 1512 hrs (IST) as planned (sic)", the Indian Space Research Organisation or ISRO tweeted along with a photograph of the operations centre from where Chandrayaan-2's orbit raising is being monitored.

The agency has planned a total of 15 orbit raising manoeuvres before the 3,850 kilogrammes (kg) three-module Chandrayaan-2 comprising an orbiter, lander and rover are brought around the Moon, which is at a distance of almost four lakh km from the Earth.

The latest manoeuvre has put Chandrayaan-2 in an orbit that, at its nearest, is 276 km from the earth's surface, and 71,792 km at the furthest.

Chandrayaan-2, ISRO's most complex and prestigious mission, lift off from its launch pad in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota on July 22, a week after it was aborted just under an hour from its launch due to a technical glitch. Since July 26, the spacecraft was moving in an orbit of 251 x 54,829 km. All spacecraft parameters were found normal.

The spacecraft comprises three segments - the Orbiter (weighing 2,379 kg, eight payloads), the lander "Vikram" (1,471 kg, four payloads) and rover "Pragyan" (27 kg, two payloads).

The agency said Wednesday it seeks small- and mid-size lunar landers that can transport power sources, rovers, science experiments and other technology demonstration payloads during the Artemis lunar mission.

NASA's Ranger spacecraft were created to orbit the moon and document the surface.

Later, through a set of manoeuvres, the orbit of Chandrayaan-2 around the moon will be circularised at 100 km height from the lunar surface, it said. After that, the Chandrayaan-2 is scheduled to reach moon by August 20 and the lander Vikram will land on the Earth's sole satellite on September 7.
