IHG to phase out mini plastic toiletries in all hotels

IHG to phase out mini plastic toiletries in all hotels”

IHG made the announcement Tuesday, issuing a news release "that its entire hotel estate of nearly 843,000 guest rooms will switch to bulk-sized amenities, with the transition to be completed during 2021".

The announcement has come from the chain's parent company, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), one of the world's leading hotel companies, which is making the move across all 843,000 guest rooms in its global hotel estate.

On average, the hotel group says it uses 200 million bathroom miniatures every year.

InterContinental Hotels Group has more than 5,600 hotels around the world, with brands that include Holiday Inn, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts and Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants.

The company has already vowed to remove plastic straws from all of its hotels by 2019.

The owner of the Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and InterContinental chains will switch to bulk dispensers, refillable bottles and ceramic containers by the end of 2021. In a smaller-scale initiative, Marriott announced in 2018 it was replacing miniature-sized plastic toiletries with bulk-sized dispensers at 1,500 hotels in North America Hilton Hotels revealed this March that it's recycling used soap, transforming it into new bars of soap after they've been crushed and sanitized.

Total plastic straw bans have also been criticised by some people with disabilities. IHG said a year ago that its hotels would no longer use them by the end of 2019, and its competitor Marriott International made a similar announcement. For example, as the FT reported, "A survey carried out by Hilton previous year found that a third of customers actively researched a hotel company's environmental efforts before staying with them".
