Second Ebola case recorded in DRC city of Goma

Second Ebola case recorded in DRC city of Goma”

One-year after the beginning of the complex outbreak in the volatile eastern part of the DRC - and ten days since the "alarming confirmation of a first case in Goma, the region's biggest city, with some two million people" - WFP's Spokesperson Herve Verhoosel said that the United Nations agency is "stepping up preparations for a potential further escalation of the epidemic".

The affected person arrived on July 13 from a mining area in northeastern Congo's Ituri province and began showing signs on July 22.

According to MSF, reported Ebola cases since early June average between 75 and 100 each week. Goma is on Congo's heavily traveled border with Rwanda and has an worldwide airport.

More than 1 700 people have died since an outbreak in the eastern Congo was declared nearly a year ago, prompting the World Health Organization in July to declare a global emergency.

Congolese health officials said that "all measures are being taken to strengthen surveillance at points of entry and sanitary control", amid concern the virus could spread to neighbouring countries.

This week marked one year since the start of the ongoing Ebola outbreak in DRC that has already killed more than 1,700 people, making it the second worst Ebola outbreak in history. Containing the outbreak faces unprecedented challenges amid attacks by rebel groups and resistance by wary community residents in a region of Congo that had never experienced an Ebola outbreak before. World Health Organization says the risk of regional spread remains "very high".

He said far more children need vaccinating "against the full array of diseases, to protect them from all the public health risks they are exposed to".

"When I left, there were 12 new confirmed cases, five were alive and will have the chance to access treatment, but seven had died in the community".

"That help us and that help WHO and the Government to have those people coming to the health centers where they receive the food." he said.

Verhoosel says WFP urgently needs $50 million over the next six months to carry out its operation in conflict-ridden North Kivu and Ituri provinces, as well as in neighboring Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. The city is one of the communities hardest hit by this outbreak, which is second only to the 2014-16 Ebolaepidemic in West Africa that left more than 11,300 people dead.
