Fourth Ebola Case Detected In Goma After Husband And Daughter Infected”

The miner's one-year-old daughter was confirmed on Thursday to have contracted the virus.

A day later, the UN's World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the epidemic a "public health emergency of worldwide concern", a move created to step up the global response. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the arrival of Ebola to Goma a "game-changer" that has alarmed the worldwide humanitarian response community.

Two people have died in Uganda, which also borders Congo, further north. Harris said 538 primary and secondary contacts had so far been traced of all four Ebola patients in Goma. Rwanda briefly shut down its border crossing in light of the new cases, stalling the traffic of an estimated 45,000 people who pass through each day, an immigration official tells Reuters.

The miner, who is believed to have contracted the virus in Ituri province, died on Wednesday, according to the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP).

CIDRAP notes that, despite concerns over a potential outbreak in Goma, "incidence rates haven't changed since the WHO's last weekly report". As of yesterday, there were 1,823 deaths, and 423 suspected cases under investigation. "The number of health workers infected in the outbreak has risen to 146".

Almost 200 contacts of the man have been tracked down and almost 160 of them vaccinated, according to the government. Of those, 160 had reportedly received an Ebola vaccine.

We remain on the ground in DRC, are committed as a long-term partner and will keep working in other countries where an Ebola outbreak may strike. The researchers are starting their study following the recent resignation of DRC health minister Oly Ilunga, who opposed introducing a second vaccine in the country.

"All seven were vaccinated and brought back to Goma".

It was the worst Ebola outbreak in the nation's history, with at least 2,700 people so far infected with the virus.

However, a risky mix of militia violence and a deep-seated mistrust of health workers and officials have hobbled efforts to contain the outbreak and halt its spread. CDC is committed to strengthening the healthcare system in DRC to help reduce the risk of future outbreaks, not only of Ebola, but of other diseases such as HIV, measles, tuberculosis, and malaria. He was isolated at an Ebola treatment centre on Tuesday. Officials have documented as many as 200 attacks on health workers in Congo this year.

"What you are reading in media is not true, but people simply misunderstood the situation at the border this morning", Gashumba told Xinhua in a telephone interview. "It's a conflict zone and has been for the last 20-25 years, it's an area of opposition politically that has felt marginalized with a high distrust of local authorities". And yet many people in the region that had never experienced an Ebola outbreak before don't believe that the virus is real, health workers have said. The vaccine is 97 percent effective.
