Japanese woman who visited DR Congo tested for Ebola

Japanese woman who visited DR Congo tested for Ebola”

Six other people suspected of infection were discharged after testing negative on Friday, the presidency added. The current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which began in August 2018, has infected more than 2 400 people and killed more than 1 800, making it the deadliest since a 2013 epidemic.

She is the daughter of the second patient, a gold miner, who died earlier in the week. Their family members were taken back to Congo for treatment.

"The individual concerned spent time with his family being very symptomatic within the community".

Already more than 180,000 people in Congo's yearlong outbreak have received an experimental but effective Merck vaccine, but health experts worry about the availability of doses as the virus now spreads in a major city, Goma, along the Rwanda border.

But he warned that about half of the cases in this outbreak are going undetected and at that rate "this epidemic could last two or three years". Ebola response simulation exercises are on a regular basis within the community, borders, airport and treatment Centre to test Rwanda's preparedness in response to a case, which includes emergency Operations Centre activation, active surveillance, case management and laboratory testing.

Other countries in the region fear the virus could spread from the DR Congo to their territories.

Two people have died in Uganda, which also borders Congo, further north. Harris said 538 primary and secondary contacts had so far been traced of all four Ebola patients in Goma. The World Health Organization declared the current outbreak of Ebola an worldwide public health emergency in July.

Ebola is an acute and severe viral disease, characterized by the sudden onset of fever, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea and bleeding in the body orifices. The virus is most often spread by close contact with bodily fluids of people exhibiting symptoms and with contaminated objects such as sheets.

There is no medical cure for Ebola, although an unlicensed but tested vaccine has been widely deployed to help protect frontline workers.

The Security Council called for an immediate end to hostilities among armed groups whose activities compromise the Ebola response, and for an end to attacks on health and humanitarian workers.

It has been tested on 6,000 people and "has shown outstanding safety", says Professor Peter Piot, a leading expert on Ebola and director of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, which has been involved with pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson in the development of the vaccine.
