ULA Atlas V Lofts USAF Protected Comm Sat”

The Atlas V rocket that may launch the AEHF-5 satellite tv for pc rolls out to the launch web site at Cape Canaveral Air Drive Station in Florida.

The Atlas V is a "workhorse" for the military.

Two issues with the rocket were investigated in the minutes before launch, pushing back the initial liftoff time by almost half an hour.

(Reuters) - United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Boeing Co and Lockheed Martin Corp, blasted off into space on Thursday morning, one of the final satellites for the U.S. Air Force's new secure communications network. Aboard is the fifth Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellite, created to provide the USA military with highly-secure communications. "AEHF affords national leaders anti-jam, always-on connectivity during all levels of conflict and enables both strategic and tactical users to communicate globally across a high-speed network that delivers protected communications in any environment".

The Atlas V was utilised in its 551 configuration, the rocket's most powerful which includes a 5.4-metre fairing and 5 solid rocket boosters.

The rocket is scheduled to elevate off from House Launch Complicated-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Drive Station in Florida throughout a two-hour launch window that opens at 5:44 a.m. EDT (0944 GMT).

The satellite was meant to provide the military with "jam-resistant" and enhanced communication, according to a Space and Missile Systems Center press release. The CubeSat separated from the rocket's upper stage. The first AEHF satellite was launched in 2010. The CubeSat is a US Air Force payload that, according to ULA was "designed to test new capabilities of small satellites used by US government agencies".

Onboard the AEHF-5 spacecraft, Aerojet Rocketdyne provided electric XR-5 Hall Thruster strings and monopropellant rocket engines that steer the spacecraft through its mission, including safely deorbiting the satellite at the end of its service life.
