Red meat consumption may increase breast cancer risk

Red meat consumption may increase breast cancer risk”

Those who ate the most red meat had a 23 percent higher chance of developing breast cancer than those who ate the least, according to a study of 42,000 women.

It has been discovered that those women who breastfeed their children for more than a year are less attacked by breast cancer.

After around seven years, 1,536 cases of invasive breast cancer had been diagnosed among the participants.

He added that the findings only provided "weak associations" between red meat and poultry and the odds of breast cancer.

Conversely, increasing consumption of poultry was associated with decreased invasive breast cancer risk: women with the highest consumption had a 15% lower risk than those with the lowest consumption.

According to Nitin Leekha, Senior Consultant, Surgical Oncology at Jaypee Hospital in Noida, apart from reducing the consumption of red meat, there are a number of precautions and other lifestyle improvements which reduce the risk of cancer.

Those factors included race, economic status, obesity, physical activity, alcohol consumption and other dietary issues. Furthermore, no link between various cooking techniques and cancer risk was observed.

"Red meat has been identified as a probable carcinogen", said researcher Dale P. Sandler, PhD. A recently conducted study has made the startling revelation that red meat consumption may increase the risk of breast cancer.

On the other hand, while associate professor Mieke Van Hemelrijck at King's College London also stressed the study showed an association and not causation, she said it could help to generate further hypothesis around how breast cancer develops.

"Research has found that eating less red meat decreases the risk of several diseases including colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and overall mortality", Heller said.

"The results could be used to help us further understand how diet may have an influence in the development of cancer", she said.

The researchers also found that women who switched from red meat to poultry lowered their risk - but they do not know why. A small percentage of men are attacked by cancer of the breast but is very common to women.

However, the "association has not been consistently seen", the researchers wrote in the International Journal of Cancer.

Together, we've decided to make a difference by walking and raising money for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Tucson event on October 20th at Armory Park, downtown Tucson.

"When we eat a more plant-based diet, exercise regularly, shun tobacco - in any form - and get enough sleep, we are arming our body with the nutrients it needs to fight disease, protect cells and maintain optimal health", Heller said.

Red meat has been linked to breast cancer - The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies it as "probably carcinogenic to humans".
