Walmart CEO responds to shooting amid calls to end gun sales”

Warren says on Twitter that Walmart "is one of the largest gun retailers in the world" and has a responsibility to prioritize public safety.

We are a learning organization, and, as you can imagine, we will work to understand the many important issues that arise from El Paso and Southaven, as well as those that have been raised in the broader national discussion around gun violence.

"They said they will be thoughtful and careful about their response, so we are respectful of that..."

A memo regarding the sign removal circulated on social media after two mass shootings last week, including a rampage that killed 22 people in a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.

His visit and Facebook message come as the retail giant is facing pressure from some employees and antigun activists to halt its sales of firearms or prohibit shoppers from carrying guns in stores.

The retailer is one of America's biggest sellers of guns and ammunition, and to be sure, it has taken some steps to curb gun violence. The retailer's selection is focused on hunting rifles and shotguns. It stopped selling handguns in 1993, and in 2015 ceased sales of assault-style rifles.

Many people have called on Walmart to stop selling guns altogether.

Marshall said he was shut out of the company's email and messaging networks temporarily earlier this week after he started the protest, but that he has since been granted access.

He said the company's policy on selling firearms had not changed. "I felt like I had to do something or else I would really be complicit in a company that was continuing to sell firearms".

The company believes "there are more constructive ways for associates to offer feedback such as emails or conversations with leaders", said Walmart's Mr. Hargrove. But there are plenty of people who think that's just not enough, including Walmart employees calling for a walkout, want the company to take stronger action. Hargrove, the Walmart spokesman, said Marshall and Kesner were the only employees who had done so.

The debate is more evidence of the hard balancing act Walmart navigates as it works to improve its reputation with shoppers and diversifies its workforce, adding offices around the country to attract more technology talent.

With 1.5 million workers, Walmart is the nation's largest employer, according to The Washington Post.

'We have made great strides already, but now we must organize to shape this company into a place we can all be proud of.

"As it becomes clearer that the shooting in El Paso was motivated by hate, we are more resolved than ever to foster an inclusive environment where all people are valued and welcomed", McMilon wrote in a letter posted to LinkedIn Tuesday.

Walmart will still be selling actual guns that can be used to inflict real-life violence, which seems like a more pressing matter no matter how you slice it.
