Ryanair pilots warn of industrial action unless airline addresses issues by Monday

Ryanair pilots warn of industrial action unless airline addresses issues by Monday”

Ryanair said the strike action had the backup of less than 30% of its pilots as only half were BALPA members.

But BALPA has said pilot union colleagues in Spain, Ireland, Sweden and Germany have made "little, if any, meaningful progress" in talks with Ryanair.

The British Airline Pilots' Association is engaged in its own pay dispute with the company.

The pilots' union Balpa said "decades of Ryanair refusing to deal with unions" had led to members voting for a 48-hour strike beginning on 22 August and a 72-hour strike from 2 September.

It is notable that over 70% of Ryanair's United Kingdom pilots are either not members of Balpa, or did not vote in Balpa's ballot, or voted against industrial action.

The union submitted a pay claim in March "in line with sector norms" and has accused the company of stalling in its negotiations.

"At this stage, only a substantive counter-proposal, which properly addresses all areas of our claim, will be enough to prevent us from serving notice of industrial action next week", said Mr McDonnell.

One Twitter user backed the pilots and slammed Ryanair as "one of the most anti-union management teams" in Europe. BALPA has said it's committed to finding a negotiated solution to that dispute, and strike dates have not yet been set.

Less than 50 percent of Ryanair's United Kingdom pilots were BALPA members, with "just 57 percent" voting in favour of industrial action.

Ryanair slammed the strikes as "ill-timed", stating that they will take place 10 weeks before Brexit and "cause unnecessary disruption to customers holidays and travel plans".

It claims its pilots earn 20% more than those in comparable 737 airlines like Norwegian.

'Balpa have no mandate to disrupt our customers holidays and flights, particularly at a time when United Kingdom pilots are facing job losses due to the Boeing Max delivery delays, and the threat of a no-deal Brexit on 31 October, ' a spokesperson said.

Ryanair urged Forsa to explain why it is announcing industrial action while still in a mediation process.

They are unhappy with pay and working conditions.

"We are wary that any pilot strike in August will cause serious impact for both holidaymakers and corporate travellers, as we are still in the busiest travel period of the year, with knock on effects on accommodation and connecting travel".
