Hobbs & Shaw repeats at No”

Audiences helped the "Fast & Furious" spinoff "Hobbs & Shaw" take another lap at No. 1 even with an onslaught of four new major releases this weekend.

According to a report from Variety, even though Hobbs and Shaw was up against several other movies this past weekend, it still reigned supreme at the domestic box offices. The action film directed by David Leitch and written by Chris Morgan and Drew Pearce is a spin-off of The Fast and the Furious franchise and follows the characters Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson, and Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham.

The movie stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza and Gabriel Rush in a story about small-town teenagers who are tormented by a book they removed from a haunted house in 1968.

Scary Stories exceeded expectations at the box office, however, it was the only one to do so at the theaters this weekend. The remake of the popular 1994 film has an all-star voice cast including Donald Glover, Beyonce, Seth Rogen, James Earl Jones and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Newcomer Dora And The Lost City Of Gold, from Paramount Pictures, found a healthy audience too, earning an estimated $17 million for fourth place.

And placing fifth, in its second week out, was Sony's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, at US$11.6 million. Forecasts for the film, which cost $49 million to make, ranged from $20.5 million to $22 million.

"The filmmakers took a very bold approach to their choice with the movie and ... it just didn't resonate with the viewers", Goldstein says.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold, a live-action movie based on TV's Dora the Explorer cartoons, got a little lost in its opening weekend against a slew of new pictures and strong holdovers like the latest Fast & Furious film and The Lion King.

Overall box office is down 6.3 percent year-to-date, according to Comscore.

But the marketplace is already looking ahead to the fall and the release of "It Chapter Two".

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
