Red Bull promotes Alex Albon - demotes Pierre Gasly!”

Toro Rosso rookie Alexander Albon will replace Pierre Gasly as Max Verstappen's Red Bull teammate from the next race in Belgium until the end of the season, the Formula One team announced on Monday.

"Alexander Albon is being promoted to Aston Martin Red Bull Racing to drive alongside Max Verstappen, while Pierre Gasly will return to the Red Bull sister team, Scuderia Toro Rosso", read the team statement.

The switch-around marks a meteoric rise for Albon, who was racing in Formula Two past year and seemed destined for a future with Nissan in the all-electric Formula E series before Red Bull stepped in.

Toro Rosso driver Alexander Albon of Thailand steers his vehicle during the second Formula One practice session at the Hockenheimring racetrack in Hockenheim, Germany, July 26, 2019. Toro Rosso's line-up will now be comprised of two Red Bull racing's rejects. However, the trust the team has put in Albon underlines its belief in the Thai driver, who finished third in the F2 championship past year.

Much like time itself, Formula 1 waits for no man.

Gasly has yet to finish on the podium since being promoted from Toro Rosso to Red Bull this year, with a best result of fourth place in Silverstone. He also hasn't amassed any podium finishes, despite racing in a vehicle that has already taken Verstappen to two race wins and another top 3 finishes.

Albon has acquitted himself well in F1 so far, scoring five top-ten finishes in 2019, including an impressive P6 in Germany.

With Daniil Kvyat having a podium finish to his name this season, as well as nearly double the points, the Russian may feel quite hard done by that he wasn't the man called up to race alongside Max Verstappen.

Speaking after the Hungarian Grand Prix just over a week ago, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said it was the team's "intention" to stick with Gasly, underlining how quickly the decision to switch drivers came about.

Albon will make his Red Bull debut at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps on September 1.
