Steelers WR Coach Darryl Drake Passes Away

Steelers WR Coach Darryl Drake Passes Away”

No cause of death was specified in a statement from Steelers president Art Rooney II.

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver coach Darryl Drake has died, team officials said Sunday. "Let faith guide us all through this incredibly hard moment... sending prayers to all of the extended Drake family, especially to his incredible wife Sheila and their lovely children". And players who had interacted with Drake, both with the Steelers and in his previous two jobs with the Cardinals and Bears expressed their feelings on the passing of the longtime receivers coach.

"Darryl was a close friend and had a tremendous impact on my coaching career", Tomlin said. "Darryl loved the game of football and every player he ever coached".

Drake's coaching career spanned almost four decades, starting as a Western Kentucky graduate assistant in 1983 before working his way into the National Football League ranks.

"We are at a loss for words following Darryl Drake's passing this morning".

In light of his death, the Steelers canceled their Sunday practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

He moved on to the same position with the Arizona Cardinals in 2013 before joining Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin's staff in 2018.

Drake was well-liked by the Steelers, where he was remembered for his one-liners in practice, including "don't drag the toe, click it" when coaching wide receivers to stay in bounds during drills. "Today, the entire football community mourns his loss".

"I'm heartbroken for anyone who had the privilege to know Darryl".

In a tweet Sunday, Arians called Drake a "great man".

"I saw the hours coaches put in and said no, that's not what I want to do", Drake said (via the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review).

"My heart and our prayers are with his wife, Sheila, and Darryl's entire family".

The Cardinals issued a statement via social media as well.

Drake was entering his second season with the Steelers and the 15th of his coaching career.
