Jamie Chadwick secures inaugural W Series title!

Jamie Chadwick secures inaugural W Series title!”

Visser started fifth, needing to win, and overtook Chadwick for third in the closing stages to end the season as runner-up and with a $250,000 payout.

She finished on the podium at five of the six races, winning in Hockenheim, Zolder and Misano. At the beginning of the year I thought it just might be a great season. As Powell led the field into Clearways and the safety auto peeled into the pit lane with six minutes remaining in the 30-minute race, she cleverly bunched up the field then nailed it onto the straight, establishing a lead over Kimilainen that she would never lose. "It'll sink in soon I'm sure, but it hasn't yet", said the 2019 champion when all was said and done.

FIA Superlicense points - 40 of which are required to race in F1 - will be up for grabs next season as W Series expands, but Chadwick revealed she may not defend her title in 2020.

The race for third was between Chadwick and championship rival Beitske Visser. "And then I was, like, let's just bring this home, let's not make any more mistakes".

"Going there feels like we've got the odds stacked in our favor, but I don't want to let that jinx anything", said Chadwick, who has won two races and this year became a development driver for the Williams Formula One team.

'I'm relieved. It feels fantastic to win the championship. "I would have liked to have dominated, but it means that I've had some good racing this year, which is ultimately what they are out to achieve". Next year, the W Series victor will also get points.

Chadwick said after the race: "To be the inaugural W Series champion is simply unbelievable".

"We've spent so much of this year talking to the media about what is W Series, why it's needed and responding to our critics and giving our point of view against their criticism".

"Naturally there are still some critics, but I think generally the reception to at least the first race was really positive".

Alice Powell's victory saw her claim third in the W Series championship, with fellow British racers Sarah Moore and Jessica Hawkins taking 8th and 12th overall respectively.
