Jones hits out at 'ridiculous' Barrett red card”

Eddie Jones hit out at World Rugby over a "ridiculous" red card shown to New Zealand's Scott Barrett and allayed injury concerns over Tom Curry after England's Rugby World Cup warm-up win over Wales.

The 32-year-old was involved in a scuffle with Mike Brown during a social event at the squad's training camp in Treviso a fortnight ago. Piers Francis is included but there is no place for Brad Shields.

Billy Vunipola was the man the break the deadlock in front of a sell-out crowd before Joe Cokanasiga also crossed and a mistake at the line-out from the experienced Ken Owens allowed opposite number Luke Cowan-Dickie to steal in - although Wales scrum-half Gareth Davies had scored a scintillating try of his own during the first half.

Sevens specialist and 2016 Olympic silver-medallist Ruaridh McConnochie continues a remarkable year by being present as the only uncapped player on the strength of an impressive end to his debut season for Bath.

Gloucester scrumhalf Heinz appears to have done enough with a excellent performance against Wales on Sunday, but interestingly is one of just two scrumhalves in the squad alongside Ben Youngs.

Jones said: "A lot of good players have missed out".

Australian coach Jones has significant World Cup experience - he was in charge of the Australia team that lost to England in the 2003 final and was a consultant with South Africa when the Springboks won in 2007. Ludlam was particularly impressive in the 33-19 win at Twickenham that prevented Wales replacing world champion New Zealand as rugby's top-ranked side.

"We have taken the decision to go early because of what we learned from previous campaigns", he said.

"The message we have for them is that they have still got to be ready because the circumstances of the World Cup dictates that you have injuries". England also has the experience of prop Dan Cole, second-rower Courtney Lawes and scrumhalf Ben Youngs, who will play in their third World Cups.

England became the first hosts to exit the tournament in the pool stage in 2015 under former head coach Stuart Lancaster.

England then travel to Kobe to face the United States on September 26, before games against Argentina on October 5, and France on October 12.
