Latest WhatsApp beta for Android adds fingerprint authentication feature

Latest WhatsApp beta for Android adds fingerprint authentication feature”

The feature is now available to those who have registered in WhatsApp's beta programme for Android. The feature adds a button called Edit that when tapped will automatically take the user to the section that allows for the edit to happen.

The much-anticipated feature, which has been available for iOS WhatsApp users for quite a while now - the "fingerprint unlock" for the messaging platform, has been introduced to Android users as well.

Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has today rolled out a feature where you will be able to unlock WhatsApp on your smartphone by using the fingerprint sensor on your Android device. The report also claimed that WhatsApp doesn't have access to user's fingerprint data for validation.

The feature is compatible with phones running Android Marshmallow or higher, and those that feature a fingerprint scanner. Previously known as Authentication or Screen Lock, the new feature can be enabled from the Settings menu under the Account / Privacy tabs.

The new Fingerprint Lock feature on WhatsApp is offered with three options - "immediately", "After 1 minute" and "After 30 minutes". Alternatively, if you don't want to wait, WABetaInfo suggests you could backup your chat history and reinstall WhatsApp, which will likely enable the option on your device. If everything goes well during tests, Fingerprint Lock might be deployed to all Android users in the next couple of weeks.

If you disable this option, you would be able to reply to messages from the notification bar and even accept or decline WhatsApp calls without having to punch in your biometrics. You can then select how frequently you want WhatsApp to prompt you to use your biometrics to unlock the app. The feature is disabled by default and needs to be activated from the settings.

We can see the feature in the latest Android beta, and it should roll out to stable app users soon. Right now, the 2.19.3 beta update is rolling out in batches and it's yet to pop up on Google Play Store as well.
