Toronto winner Andreescu pulls out of Cincinnati WTA

Toronto winner Andreescu pulls out of Cincinnati WTA”

"I don´t want to get this far and not at least try", said the 37-year-old, who was eyeing her 73rd WTA title - and her first since the birth of her daughter, Olympia, in September of 2017. She even discerns that it's Williams's back that's giving her problems.

While she remains grounded in her work ethic and her ability to come back from injury, her victory at the Rogers Cup has given her a boost ahead of the U.S. Open.

These back spasms now are another hurdle for Williams in her latest shot at trying to match Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles. She remembers swinging her racquet at Willistead Park which used to have a tennis court and Jackson Park, and practicing at Assumption College's handball alleys which meant less time retrieving tennis balls.

The singles portion of the Rogers Cup concludes Sunday in Toronto.

We discussed Andreescu's victory in Toronto and what may lie ahead for the teenager. "I just think I was really sad, and she made me feel a lot better, so that was really nice", she said. "I know now that I need to schedule my tournaments a little better". So I tried not to look at it as a setback, but more as a challenge.

Andreescu took the title after an emotional Serena Williams was forced to bow out in the first set due to back spasms.

Winning the Rogers Cup rocketed Andreescu up the WTA Tour rankings to No. 14 on Monday. I went to a Toronto FC game. Then she's scheduled to play an exhibition match at the Aurora Games in Albany, N.Y., before tuning up for the next Grand Slam.

"The U.S Open is right around the corner", she said.

"The first phase is painful, to a point where I usually don't get out of bed".

After Williams addressed the crowd, Andreescu took time to praise the tennis professional and those in attendance at the match.

That question was answered Sunday afternoon when Andreescu, who is said to have a will of steel and a heart of gold, hoisted the winner's trophy.

I know it's so easy to say, but it hasn't come easy. I've watched you win so many times, you are truly a champion on and off the court.

Williams addressed the spectators at the end and admitted: "I'm not a crier, but I'm sorry I couldn't do it today".
