Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus caught in Louisville

Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus caught in Louisville”

On July 30, Peel Regional Police released a media advisory that there had been mosquitos found that were carrying West Nile Virus, but there were no reported human cases of it. The virus was previously confirmed in Lehigh County this year.

"As we head into late summer, we know that residents and visitors to Toronto are maximizing their time outside to enjoy the weather and outdoor activities", Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto's medical officer of health, said in the release.

While the risk of becoming infected remains low, wear light-coloured clothes and long trousers and sleeves.

There were no other reported cases this year, while last year there were 39 human cases in Toronto. Those who get sick develop symptoms two to 15 days later. They can include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands. Those with a compromised immune system are at higher risk of illness.

Tarte recommends people prevent mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves, pants, insect repellant and limiting outside activity during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Wear light-colored clothing, long-sleeved shirts or jackets and long trousers to protect against mosquito bites.

Remove standing water from your property, where mosquitoes can breed.
