Nora Quoirin: Family identify body found in Malaysia as missing teen

Nora Quoirin: Family identify body found in Malaysia as missing teen”

A body believed to be 15-year-old Irish girl Nora Anne Quoirin who went missing is brought out of a helicopter in Seremban, Malaysia, on August 13, 2019.

State police chief Mohammed Yusop said that a body was found in the Betembum mountains and is not in an accessible place.

Her body was found just over 2km away from the Dusun, according to BBC correspondent Howard Johnson.

Nora Anne, a special needs child, went missing on August 4 after her family had checked in to the resort a day earlier for a two-week holiday.

The following day, missing persons charity The Lucie Blackman Trust said the Malaysian police were treating Nora's disappearance as a potential abduction, but officers on the ground denied any foul play.

The incident drew worldwide attention and support for the family, including from Garry Kasparov, a Russian former world chess champion.

On Monday, the family had offered a 50,000 ringgit ($11,900) reward, donated by a Belfast business, for information that could lead to her return. They listed her as a missing person but said the investigation included possible criminal aspects of the case.

The family of an Irish teenager found dead in a Malaysian jungle have said they will not demand a criminal investigation into her death.

"All at The Lucie Blackman Trust are thinking of the family and continue to support them as they come to terms with this news". I'd like to pay tribute to everyone who searched for Nora.

Simon Coveney, Ireland's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, tweeted: "Irish + French embassies in Malaysia working together to provide every assistance to the Quoirin family".

Shirley Yap, who was among a group of around 20 volunteers from the nearby town of Seremban, said: 'We had heard she was excited about seeing a waterfall when she arrived in the resort'.

President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, and his wife Sabina were among those to offer their "deepest condolences" to Nora's parents and her family.

The schoolgirl's grandfather, Sylvain Quoirin, who is a mayor in France, had previously said it was "unthinkable" Nora would have wandered off alone because of the severity of her learning difficulties. She was born with holoprosencephaly, a rare congenital brain malformation.

The body was flown by helicopter to Tuanku Jaafar Hospital where her parents positively identified the remains of their eldest daughter. Police from Ireland, France and the United Kingdom are also on site to assist in the investigation. "She is so precious to us and our hearts are breaking", her mother said.

The search involved more than 300 personnel including from the National Crime Agency (NCA), the Metropolitan Police and the Malaysian police.
