Norwegian to discontinue all transatlantic routes between Ireland and North America

Norwegian to discontinue all transatlantic routes between Ireland and North America”

"Compounded by the global grounding of the 737 MAX and the continued uncertainty of its return to service, this has led us to make the hard decision to discontinue all six routes from Dublin, Cork and Shannon to the United States and Canada", Norwegian said in a release.

"As the airline moves from growth to profitability, we have conducted a comprehensive review of our transatlantic operations between Ireland and North America and considering the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, we have concluded that these routes are no longer commercially viable", said Matthew Wood, SVP Long Haul Commercial at Norwegian.

The airline and markets business took a hit with tough trading conditions as well as Boeing 737.

The Oslo-based carrier began offering daily year-round service between Hamilton and Dublin in March.

Despite Boeing's hopes to return the aircraft to the skies by 2020, the 737 MAX 8 remains grounded across the world until further notice, with Mr Dickson's leadership role at the FAA playing a pivotal role in repairing damaged ties between the planemaker and global aviation authorities.

"We will redouble our efforts to secure a new transatlantic carrier for Cork to operate from Summer 2021, and we are in active discussions with a number of carriers in this regard", said Cork Airport managing director, Niall MacCarthy.

Customers who have booked flights which have been affected by the decision have been informed and offered to be rerouted or given a full refund, according to the airline.

The grounding has caused huge disruption for airlines, which have had to charter new planes to maintain flight schedules.

Profits in other branches of TUI's business were clouded by losses stemming from the Boeing 737 MAX groundings.

And it dropped the plane from its schedule until early January - two months longer than American - to allow time for pilot retraining and avoid disruptions for holiday-season travelers. TUI fly Germany plans to operate 25 MAXs to replace its current 737-800 fleet.

However, it added that customer numbers were marginally ahead of prior year and the segment delivered a "stable" underlying result outside of the 737 MAX grounding impact.

Tourism group TUI warned on Tuesday that the grounding was a big burden as it reported a 46% decline in underlying quarterly core earnings (EBITA).
