Hurricane Dorian Ties ‘Strongest Atlantic Hurricane Landfall on Record,’ NHC Says

Hurricane Dorian Ties ‘Strongest Atlantic Hurricane Landfall on Record,’ NHC Says”

The president says a few words before being briefed on Hurricane Dorian.

CNN have reported major damage in the Abaco Islands today as a result of Dorian.

The NHC, describes the expected extreme weather as "life-threatening" and "devastating".

NHC director Ken Graham on Facebook Live said the Bahamas would be under major hurricane conditions for a punishing 30 hours or more.

Residents load sandbags to protect their homes in Deltona, Florida, as they prepare for Hurricane Dorian. Storm surge across the northern Bahamas is expected to exceed 10 feet in some areas. But exactly where (or if) it will hit the US East Coast remains unclear.

Residents of the Abaco Islands closest to the storm were warned to "seek elevated shelter immediately", as U.S. forecasters predicted a towering storm surge of 18 to 23 feet (about 5.5 to 7 meters).

Dorian is slowing down over the Bahamas, likely causing catastrophic damage on those islands. But current forecasts have it turning north Monday evening.

"It's been lurking, it's just been building out there, it's been moving very slowly, it's a bad thing, not a good thing, the slower it moves, the bigger it is and the bigger it gets", he said.

Dorian slow speed means it is expected to sit over the Bahamas for 24 hours, beginning at 14:00 EDT (19:00 BST) on Sunday.

Where will Dorian go next?

"A small deviation to the left of the track could bring the intense core of the hurricane its risky winds closer to or onto the Florida coast", the Hurricane Center wrote in its 5 pm discussion Sunday.

Dorian's power was second only to Hurricane Allen in 1980, with its 305kmh winds.

The hurricane should then move closer to the Florida east-coast late Monday through Tuesday night.

Trump has declared a federal state of emergency in Florida, authorizing USA assistance to supplement state and local efforts. As the Hurricane Center writes: "Residents in these areas should continue to monitor the progress of Dorian".

"This is a storm of storms", St. John County Sheriff David Shoar told reporters Sunday.

About 4,400 Florida National Guard soldiers and airmen are preparing to respond as well, and they will focus primarily on search and rescue, communications and aviation, spokeswoman Maj. Only eight left on the last ferry out, he said.

While most models keep Dorian offshore Florida, the Hurricane Center wrote in its 11 am Sunday advisory that a track near the coast or even landfall in Florida remain possibilities.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has so far said that some tolls have been suspended in the state of Florida to make evacuations easier.

Popular attractions, including Disney World in Orlando, have said they are "closely monitoring" the storm. He said it's the "safest place" to be in Central Florida during a hurricane. "I'm not sure that I've ever heard of a Category 5", he said. "It's a self-contained city".

"I am lucky to have half a house", she said in a text message with NBC News.
