Month After Texas Shooting, Walmart To Stop Selling Handgun Ammunition

Month After Texas Shooting, Walmart To Stop Selling Handgun Ammunition”

On Sept. 3, 2019, the chain announced it will discontinue the sale of handgun ammunition.

Weapons like hunting rifles, and their accompanying ammunition, will remain in stock.

After current inventory is sold, the company will discontinue sales of handgun ammunition and short-barrel rifle ammunition such as the.223 caliber and 5.56 caliber. "It's clear to us that the status quo is unacceptable", McMillon said.

Walmart expects the changes on ammunition to lower its market share of bullets from around 20 percent to a range of six to nine percent.

There are 49 Walmart stores in MA, including 27 Supercenters.

As the reason for the changes, the memo cites the early August shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, where 22 people were killed, as well as another incident at a Walmart store in Southaven, Mississippi, where authorities say one employee fatally shot two co-workers.

Just last month, Walmart asked employees at its US stores to take down signs and playable demos of violent video games, but made no changes to its policy on selling firearms.

Senator Kamala Harris, asked if Walmart should stop selling guns, replied, "Yeah, I do.it's not that everyone needs to stop selling guns, but there need to be checks and balances". Of its almost 5,000 USA stores, about half sell firearms.

Mr McMillon said: "We know these decisions will inconvenience some of our customers, and we hope they will understand". But there are well-intentioned customers acting lawfully who have also inadvertently caused a store to be evacuated and local law enforcement to be called to respond.

"We will treat law-abiding customers with respect, and we will have a very non-confrontational approach", McMillon wrote in the announcement.

"We believe the opportunity for someone to misinterpret a situation, even in open carry states, could lead to tragic results", McMillon said in a memo distributed to employees on Tuesday.

He concluded that he'd written to Congress and the White House to encourage progress on strengthening background checks and red flag laws, along with re-upping at least the debate around the Assault Weapons Ban.

Over the last 15 years, Walmart had expanded beyond its hunting and fishing roots, carrying items like assault rifles in response to increasing demand.

Never miss the latest news from the Star. While short-barrel ammunition is commonly used in some hunting rifles for small animals such as prairie dogs, they can also be used in military-style weapons with high-capacity magazines.
