Salman Rushdie and Margaret Atwood head up 2019 Booker Prize shortlist

Salman Rushdie and Margaret Atwood head up 2019 Booker Prize shortlist”

Bernardine and the five others shortlisted will get £2,500 each and a special bound edition of their book.

Starting the process with more than 150 submissions, The Booker Prize has announced its 2019 shortlist, with six novels vying for one of the most coveted prizes in English literature.

Canadian author Atwood has been nominated to the six-person list for "The Testaments", her hotly anticipated sequel to "The Handmaid's Tale" due out later this month.

Atwood is competing with "The Testaments", which will be published by McClelland & Stewart on September 10.

The novel was offered up through watermarked copies which the judges each held in a safe place to avoid any spoilers leaking out.

Atwood previously won the prize for The Blind Assassin in 2000 and Sir Salman claimed the award for Midnight's Children in 1981.

Hay Pageant founder Mr Florence mentioned of Rushdie's ambition for Quichotte: 'You higher push the boundaries of fiction.

Meru Gokhale, publisher of Penguin Press, Penguin Random House India, said: "In "Quichotte", Salman Rushdie has again caught the zeitgeist by writing a novel that engages hilariously and meaningfully with the absurdities of the contemporary world, taking in pop culture, TV soaps, America's opioid crisis, giants of world literature, and much more besides".

Lucy Ellmann, Bernardine Evaristo, Chigozie Obioma and Elif Shafak would be the other authors whose novels are from the short-list.

Mr Florence mentioned: 'There are sturdy instances to be made for all of those books.

Last year's victor was Northern Irish writer Anna Burns for "Milkman", which has sold around 546,500 copies in all formats since the award.

The panel which is able to resolve the last word victor of the literary award consists of writer and editor Liz Calder, novelist and film-maker Xiaolu Guo, author and former barrister Afua Hirsch, and composer Joanna MacGregor.

The victor will be announced at a ceremony at London's Guildhall on Monday 14th October.
