UAW Targets GM In Talks

UAW Targets GM In Talks”

The United Auto Workers union confirmed Tuesday it will target General Motors first in negotiations for its collective bargaining agreement.

Meanwhile, GM executives announced that the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer and 2020 Buick Encore GX will both be manufactured in South Korea and exported to the US market for sale, undercutting the corporation's claim that they manufacture products where they sell them.

"Mary Barra said from the outset of these talks that we will stand up as we tackle a changing industry".

UAW leader Gary Jones called the authorization of strikes a "key tool in the toolbelt as our bargaining team sits across from the company". The routine vote doesn't mean there will necessarily be a strike, however, nor does it mean that there is more of an appetite for a strike than there has been at other times.

Contracts between the union representing about 152,000 workers and GM, Ford and Fiat Chrysler expire at 11:59 pm on Saturday, September 14.

'Clearly the UAW stood up for them in a very dark time, now that they are profitable, it is time for them to stand up for all of us'. The company announced late a year ago it would effectively idle two of its five Detroit-area plants; its plant in Lordstown, Ohio near Youngstown; one near Baltimore; and one in Canada.

The last time UAW workers went on strike against GM was in 2007. About 96% of members approved potentials strikes during talks with Fiat Chrysler, Ford Motor and General Motors (GM).

The UAW is targeting GM for this year's contract talks with automakers.

Although she doesn't know how negotiations have been going so far, the likelihood of a strike was high even before the union picked GM, Dziczek said. GM also leads all automakers in production of vehicles in Mexico, another thorny issue for the union. Ltd., Hyundai Motor Group, Volkswagen AG and others. Meanwhile, a corruption investigation continues involving the union's leadership.

Roughly 158,000 auto workers will have their wages and benefits decided by this coming round of negotiations. That compares with an average of US$50 an hour at plants owned by foreign-based automakers, according to the Center for Automotive Research.

Jones, who has not been charged, marched in Detroit's Labor Day parade but exited the route before its completion and didn't speak to union members. About 20 marchers carried signs calling for the union to be reformed.
