Gains in part-time, youth employment in August as wage growth slows

Gains in part-time, youth employment in August as wage growth slows”

A construction worker shingles the roof of a new home in a development in Ottawa on Monday, July 6, 2015.

In New Brunswick, 2,300 jobs were filled and the unemployed remained stable at 8.6 per cent. Finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing were also up, rising by 22,400 in August, while the professional, scientific and technical services sector saw an increase of 16,800 jobs.

The report landed as the domestic economy shows signs of bouncing back from a slowdown last winter. According to Statistics Canada, many of them were part-time.

The agency's latest labour force survey says the country saw a rush last month of 73,300 new positions in services industries and a boost of 94,300 jobs in the private sector.

But this time, it's not because jobs were lost.

The report says 57,200 of the new jobs were part time and 42,000 of the positions were held by young workers aged 15 to 24 years old, nearly all of whom were women.

Quebec's unemployment rate was the lowest in Canada in August, at 4.7 per cent.

StatsCan says employment numbers were "little changed" in the other provinces, though the unemployment rate rose by six-tenths of a percentage point in B.C.

"With solid details top to bottom, it is hard not to like today's report", TD senior economist Brian DePratto wrote in a report to clients.

"There's just too much contradictory data floating around right now and I do think that rates are going to come down, but not this round", said Ian Lee, faculty chair at Carleton's Sprott School of Business, joining a number of experts who fear a coming recession. It also increased by 2,800 over July of 2019.

On a year-over-year basis, the province has created 250,000 jobs, a 3.5 per cent increase.

Canada's national unemployment rate is 5.7 per cent, which is unchanged from last month's data.
