Iranian female football fan dies after setting herself on fire”

Khodayari died on Monday at a Tehran hospital after suffering burns across 90% of her body.

An Iranian female football fan has died after setting herself on fire outside a court after learning she may have to serve a six-month sentence for trying to enter a soccer stadium.

Pictures said to be of her in hospital covered in heavy bandages have been shared widely on social media.

"Now it's time for everyone in Iran to be allowed to enjoy football matches together".

Iran has barred Iranian women spectators from football and other stadiums since 1981, with clerics arguing they must be protected from the masculine atmosphere and sight of semi-clad men.

The judiciary's Mizan Online website said a young woman had been arrested when she tried to enter a stadium and faced charges of offending "public chastity and insulting" law enforcement officers.

On Tuesday, Iranians discussing Khodayari on social media used the hashtag "blue girl" for the Esteghlal team colors. She was then arrested by authorities.

Federation Internationale de Football Association said Tuesday it was "aware of that tragedy and deeply regret it".

"We are all responsible", she wrote. The conservative Shafaqna news agency acknowledged her death in a brief item Tuesday, noting that the case had drawn worldwide attention and caused "counterrevolutionary media" to cry over the case.

"Her death must not be in vain".

"This discriminatory ban must end immediately and the global community, including football's world governing body, FIFA, and the Asian Football Confederation, must take urgent action to end the ban and to ensure that women are allowed access to all sports stadiums without discrimination or risk of prosecution or punishment", he said. Esteghlal expressed sorrow over her death.

Sahar Khodayari, a 29-year-old Iranian, just wanted to watch some soccer inside the stadium. The judiciary's news website said Khodayari's body had been handed over to her family, who live in Qom, south of Tehran.

As a result, Iran says women will be able to attend qualifying games for the 2022 World Cup which are due to take place in October.

Amnesty International separately said that as far as it knows, "Iran is the only country in the world that stops and punishes women" seeking to enter soccer stadiums.

"The stadium ban is not written into law or regulation but is ruthlessly enforced by the country's authorities", said Minky Worden, director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch.

The woman's self-immolation has led to a lot of debate in Iran. Iran's government faced an August 31 dead by Fifa to allow women to attend official football matches in order to "pave the way" for female attendees, the BBC previously reported.
