Telescope detects 100 mysterious radio signals from three billion light years away”

China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) has detected a repeating fast radio burst (FRB) - mysterious radio signals from outer space - for the first time, Science and Technology Daily reported. On Monday, September 9, reported the online edition of the Chronicle.info with reference to the Correspondent.

The "fast radio bursts" were detected by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope - also known as FAST - and are now being analysed to discover how they were generated, according to Chinese publication Xinhua.

Fast radio bursts are one of modern astronomy's greatest mysteries.

Fast radio bursts are bright pulses of radio emission mere milliseconds in duration, thought to originate from distant galaxies. At the same time, they are carefully examining it. The scientists used that receiver to record fast radio bursts coming from the FRB121102, an FRBs source identified in 2015 by the Arecibo Observatory.

If mysterious space signals are the sort of thing that get you off (and it's fine if they are), I'd definitely recommend reading about the Wow! signal, which has remained a huge goddamn fucking mystery for almost half a century.

It is the world's largest filled-aperture radio telescope, and the second-largest single-dish aperture after the sparsely-filled RATAN-600 in Russian Federation. Theories striving to grasp on the fast radio bursts' intriguing origin range from guessing those to be pulses of a massive black hole or a powerful nebula to supposing those to be signals from alien intelligence.

Chinese researchers say they will continue to monitor burst from FRB121102 to gather as much information on the source of these pulses as possible. Their intentions vary from researching exoplanets and interstellar matter to studying ultra-high-energy cosmic rays and gravitational rays, just to name a few. Other scientists are already using FAST to detect FRBs.
