West Indies appoint Kieron Pollard as new ODI and T20 captain

West Indies appoint Kieron Pollard as new ODI and T20 captain”

Kieron Pollard has been appointed as West Indies' new limited-overs captain despite not playing a one-day global for three years.

He returned to play T20I series for West Indies in 2016, but then was again, not included in West Indies' T20I series against India past year in October.

"We believe Kieron Pollard is the right person at the right time now to lead the West Indies team in white ball cricket", CWI President Ricky Skerritt said at a news conference.

Skerritt added that the selection task force, headed by Dr Shallow, recommended Pollard based on his experience as part of the CWI's restructured selection system.

Bravo, who last played an ODI for Windies in Dharamsala in 2014, in a joking manner, said that he could be considered for selection in the limited-overs series with Pollard being the new captain.

The large all-rounder has by far played 101 ODIs for the team, wherein he has scored 2,289 runs at an average of 25.71 with 3 centuries and 9 fifties.

In 62 T20Is that he has played, Pollard has scored 903 runs. In ODIs, he finished with 2,968 runs at 25.36, while claiming 199 wickets at an economy rate of 5.41.

This year, he is leading his native Trinbago Knight Riders in the absence of regular skipper Dwayne Bravo who has been ruled out of the tournament with injury.

On his appointment as West Indies white ball Captain, Kieron Pollard said, "I'm truly honoured to be appointed Captain of the West Indies and I would like to thank Cricket West Indies' Board of Directors for placing their faith and confidence in me".

Pollard's first assignment as captain will be against Afghanistan in November in India where they will play three T20Is and three ODIs before a one-off Test. Pollard never represented the team in Test cricket though. Pollard replaces Jason Holder as the ODI captain and Carlos Brathwaite in T20Is.

Less than two months after the end of the World Cup, Pollard will now lead West Indies in two formats.
