England drop Jason Roy for final Ashes Test

England drop Jason Roy for final Ashes Test”

Australian selectors have dropped a selection bombshell on the eve of the fifth and final Ashes Test, dumping vice-captain Travis Head, who makes way for all-rounder Mitch Marsh to return to the XI.

England squad: Joe Root (c), Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jack Leach, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes. Ben Stokes will play as a batsman only after injuring his shoulder at Old Trafford.

Roy's omission is no great surprise as he has struggled throughout the series having started it as an opening batsman.

Tim Paine, with former captain Steve Waugh as mentor, is hoping to become the first Australian skipper to win an Ashes series on English soil since 2001. "He's had an opportunity to come in and play Test cricket, get a feel for it, and it's not quite gone how he would have liked".

"Experience tells me when you're doing well people try and pick holes in you".

Root's captaincy, and his form, has come under the spotlight but he sounded an upbeat tone as he looked forward to trying to level the series.

"You've got to keep trying to find ways of counter-acting hard passages of play and good bowling".

"We have not lost anything yet".

"He hasn't got the runs he'd like at the moment but I'm looking forward to it when he does". Of course, we are disappointed not to win the Ashes back but we are fully focused to finish the series 2-2.

"He sent me that pic, I woke up to that pic this morning, saying he'd done it in honour of me", Rogers said on The Grade Cricketer podcast.

"We are very hungry, we have already spoken a lot about it", he told reporters on Wednesday.

"This is our grand final".

Before he took over from Alastair Cook in February 2017, Root averaged 52.80 with the bat, but that figure has fallen to 40.90 since - a duck in each of the last three Ashes Tests contributing to a 2-1 series deficit. "We'll have the last laugh about that, and I think Steve Smith has definitely put those to rest and he's just done his talking with the bat".

Paine said Marsh's inclusion was aimed at easing the workload on his impressive pace attack and that he had "full faith" in his batting.
